DepEd Launches the New K-10 Curriculum

New K-10 Curriculum will focus on the development of foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills
The Department of Education (DepEd) has launched a revised Kindergarten to Grade 10 (K-10) curriculum that will focus on the development of foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills.

The new curriculum, called the MATATAG K-10 curriculum, will be implemented in phases starting in School Year (SY) 2024-2025.

One of the key features of the MATATAG K-10 curriculum is the reduction in the number of subjects in the early grades. For Grades 1 to 3, students will only be taught five subjects: Language; Reading and Literacy; Mathematics; Makabansa; and Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC).

Here are the New Subjects for every Grade Level with the New K-10 Curriculum:

  • Makabansa
  • Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC)

  • Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC)

Grade 3

Grade 7 to 10

  • Mathematics
  • Araling Panlipunan (AP)
  • Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health (MAPEH)
  • Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE)
  • Values Education

The Makabansa subject is a new learning competency that weaves skills in civics, arts and culture, history, and physical education and health.

The MATATAG K-10 curriculum also includes peace competencies to highlight the promotion of non-violent actions and the development of conflict-resolution skills in learners.

The DepEd said that the new curriculum addresses the issues that were found in the previous K-10 curriculum, such as misplaced prerequisite learning competencies and imbalanced cognitive demand.

The MATATAG K-10 curriculum also has clearer articulation of 21st century skills and is now on par with international standards.

The DepEd hopes that the MATATAG K-10 curriculum will help to improve the quality of basic education in the Philippines and prepare learners for the challenges of the 21st century.
