After a history instructor shared on social media his concerns that a student had used artificial intelligence (AI) to compose an essay, several UP faculty members demanded that the state institution reconsider academic integrity regulations to include the use — or abuse — of AI in establishing class requirements. "Manuscripts, graphic designs, videos, computer programs, and other academic requirements must be created solely by the student or group of students as required by the course instructor," the organization stated. Earlier, Francisco Guiang, an assistant history professor, stated that one of his students might have utilized AI to compose an essay for his final test. The "entire essay did not make sense — it did not have cohesion, and just randomly dropped proper nouns that had nothing to do with the essay question," according to Guiang. He went on to state that he put sections of the student's essay through two independent AI detector websites, and "both yielded results indicating that the samples were most likely written by AI."

"This is academic dishonesty," Guiang stated. His remark generated a lengthy online discussion on the ethical use of AI to fulfill academic standards, as well as legitimate concerns that faculty members would "weaponize" AI detecting systems to allege academic dishonesty against original results.

According to the UP Diliman AI program faculty, there have been allegations of some student needs being generated using large language model (LLM) systems such as ChatGPT.
