Super Mario Bros. Movie, Simply made Zelda and other Nintendo films possible

A line in the trailer The Super Mario Bros. Movie sets up a Nintendo movie universe that can include franchises like The Legend of Zelda
A small detail in Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer explains how The Legend of Zelda and other Nintendo movies could happen. Given the massive size of Nintendo’s catalog of characters, it’s not impossible that more of its franchises will wind up with big-screen adaptations eventually. Mario is without a doubt Nintendo's most recognizable character, but he's clearly not the only one in their collection that could star in his own film.

Nintendo and Illumination appear to be planning to merge two of their properties into one in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The worlds of Mario and Donkey Kong Country are confirmed to collide during the battle with Bowser. However, given that the two made their début together in 1981's Donkey Kong before splitting up, the decision makes sense. Depending on how well the film does at the box office, Nintendo may take a chance on even more of its heroes by giving them their own films. But considering how distinct Mario is from the other series, the movies may not exist in the same canon as The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Super Mario Bros. The Trailer Establishes A Nintendo Movie Universe

Surprisingly, a reveal in Super Mario Bros. The movie trailer actually allows stories like The Legend of Zelda to work in Mario's world. Princess Peach mentions the various "galaxies" that are threatened in the film at one point. On the surface, this appears to be a reference to Super Mario Galaxy, but the comment goes much deeper. It paves the way for a fully realized Nintendo film universe in which each of the "galaxies" houses a planet from another video game series. This permits characters such as Mario and Link to exist in the same universe even though their planets are independent.

If that's the case, The Super Mario Bros. Movie would have the tools it needs to feature surprise cameos from some unexpected heroes and villains. Possibly in a post-credits scene, the film could find ways to tease the existence of Link, thus laying the groundwork for a proper Legend of Zelda movie to happen later on down the road. And, because they would coexist, there should be room for crossovers if the opportunity arose.

Nintendo IPs That Could Be Adapted Into Films Following Super Mario Bros

Aside from The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo has several franchises that could fill the "galaxies" mentioned by Peach in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Pokémon, Kirby, Metroid, and Star Fox are also included. Movies focusing on Kirby, Samus from Metroid, and the spacefaring Fox McCloud have never been done before, but all three have the potential to be stand-alone films alongside Mario and Luigi's narrative. The distinct worlds they inhabit and the cast of characters that accompany them have the potential to help Nintendo and Illumination create a thriving cinematic universe for a slew of iconic video game heroes.
