Customizable parts and extra buttons sound intriguing, but the price is prohibitive
My favorite feature of Sony's most recent console, the PlayStation 5, is the DualSense controller. The pad is easy to handle, feels well-made, and adds tactile immersion to your gaming experience with its adjustable triggers and haptic rumbling. The DualSense Edge, which Sony will release early in 2019 in place of the original controller, claims to provide additional buttons and allow for finer customisation.
A "pro" controller similar to Microsoft's Xbox Elite gamepad is the DualSense Edge. These gadgets have high-end features designed with serious and professional gamers in mind. For instance, the DualSense Edge has several improvements like:
- Completely programmable button features
- the capacity to save and quickly switch between many button layouts
- Two customizable paddle buttons are located on the controller's rear.
- Thumbstick caps and many interchangeable thumbstick modules
- Adjustable stick sensitivity, trigger-button lengths, and rumbling intensity
- a locking charging cord
- Integration with the system interface of the PS5 for quick setting changes
- On January 26, 2023, the DualSense Edge will be on sale for $200. The answer is $200.
To put things into perspective, a basic DualSense can be purchased brand-new for $70. New PS5 titles typically cost between $60 and $70. The price of the PS5 is either $400 for the digital-only variant or $500 for the disc drive option. For roughly as much as one DualSense Edge, you could get three DualSense controllers, three new titles, or pay for half of a PS5.
Is the DualSense Edge $200 price tag reasonable?
The quick answer is no, but that does not mean that everyone cannot consider it. Although $200 is a bit pricey, it is not outrageous when compared to other pro controllers. For instance, depending on the model and store, the Elite 2 controller from Microsoft costs between $155 and $180 for the Xbox.
A few PS5-compatible pro pads from independent manufacturers are also available, although they are more expensive than the DualSense Edge. These include Hexgaming's $270 RIVAL Premium and Scuf's selection of configurable PS5 pro controllers, which range in price from $200 to $220. While there are third-party products available for around $200, many of them are incompatible with the PS5, or their features or construction are inferior to those offered by the more costly manufacturers.
Although third-party controllers differ from the DualSense Edge in that they have more extra buttons or swappable parts, the DualSense Edge has an advantage over its rivals thanks to its seamless interface integration with the PS5 and compatibility with other Sony first-party accessories like the DualSense charging dock.
Although the DualSense Edge may be the greatest option for premium controllers on the PS5, I do not advise purchasing it or any other professional controller.
What therefore should I buy in its place?
Simply get a $70 DualSense instead of the $200 DualSense Edge if all you need is a new controller for local cooperative games or to replace the existing pads.
Pro controllers, however, can be wonderful for eSports professionals and the small proportion of diehard players who are ready to pay that much on a single controller, as I previously stated. Personally, I would probably choose the DualSense Edge if I were looking for a professional controller. However, for the great majority of gamers who won't make advantage of any of their unique capabilities, the DualSense Edge and other professional controllers like it are simply not essential.
Customizable controls may appeal to certain people, but you don't need a pricey controller to rearrange the buttons on your current controller. However, the normal DualSense's button mapping may be modified in the PS5 menu under Settings > Accessibility > Controllers > Custom Button Assignments. Of course, button remapping is quicker and simpler on the DualSense Edge. The PS5's settings also have additional choices, such as changing the haptic feedback.
