Both of them are after Simple, Easy and Practical
PLDT's subsidiary Smart Communications said on Friday that it is collaborating with the National Telecommunications Commission as the whole telecom industry prepares for the implementation of the new SIM registration law.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. approved the bill last month, which requires the registration of all active mobile phone numbers in order to combat SMS-related frauds, among other things.
"It is in Smart's best interests to guarantee that the SIM Registration Law is simple and practical for subscribers, and that it does not deprive subscribers of their access to connection," stated Francis Flores, SVP and Head of Consumer Business Group - Individual at Smart.
Flores stated that Smart is preparing by researching best global practices and technological solutions from other nations that have taken the same policy.
Apart from supporting SIM registration, Smart stated that it has been consistently defending consumers from mobile-related fraud. SIMs that deliver spam text and URLs are being blocked by Smart.
PLDT and Smart have stated that they will invest almost P3 billion in cybersecurity infrastructure by 2021.
Meanwhile,
As the government presses forward with the implementation of the SIM Registration Act, telco giant Globe Telecom promises a "painless" and secure experience for over 80 million subscribers.
The regulation, which aims to reduce incidences of fraud and other unlawful actions, compels mobile phone customers to register their SIM cards and submit identification credentials.
The National Telecoms Commission, according to Globe, has already begun talks with various government departments and stakeholders, including telecommunications providers, for the creation of the law's implementing rules and regulations, which were signed on Oct. 10.
"We want our clients' SIM registration experience to be as simple and easy as possible." "Our objective is to remain loyal to the spirit of the legislation in carrying out its requirements, while ensuring that SIM registration is safe, inclusive, and simple for our consumers," said Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu in a statement.
"We want to reassure our clients that their data will be secure while still providing them with a simple registration experience." "We want to successfully implement this historic statute," he continued.
Once the IRR has been authorized and published, Globe will begin registering all current SIM card and e-SIM users on mobile devices.
Globe further stated that it was "considering worldwide best practices in the architecture of its SIM registration platform."
"It is also utilizing its suite of best-in-class digital technologies to create an easy yet secure registration mechanism," according to the telecom.
Scammers, according to Globe, utilize text messages to lure unwary victims into providing personal information that might be used to breach their financial accounts.
Globe has taken efforts to combat these scams on its own, including "proactive blocking, threat intelligence collaborations with financial institutions, a consumer reporting tool, and an awareness and education campaign to assist clients in protecting themselves."
Globe terminated 16,215 mobile phones and banned 19,343 more for their involvement in scam and spam messages from January to September of this year. During the same time period, it also blocked 1.3 billion spam and fraud mails.
