Footage from God of War Ragnarok Shows New Elemental Weapon Signature Moves

In Sony Santa Monica's axe-wielding sequel, Kratos will be able to blow hot and cold
God of War Ragnarök, a game notable for not slipping into a 2023 release date, has revealed a fresh piece of footage showcasing Kratos' new ways of wielding his axe and weapons.

The film, which was provided to in-store magazine Game Informer, demonstrates how gaming's grumpiest father may now imbue his strikes with elemental power.
Santa Monica Studio, the creator of the first-party Sony title, has stated that the sequel would feature a variety of new combat tactics, including better use of surrounding objects and additional ways to mess with the adversaries.

This footage, I believe, displays for the first time one of these approaches, in which Kratos can now use 'triangle' (no, it is Kratos who does it) to fire up (sorry) the elements that augment his strikes. With the Leviathan Axe, he can use Frost Awaken for a cold thwack, and with the Blades of Chaos, he can use the much hotter Whiplash. They certainly sound like powers from a video game.

The bad guys here are reptilian animals called Grims, and if that name sounds too obvious even for a game with an ability called "Frost Awaken," then shame on you. In Scandinavian tradition, the Fossegrim, or grim, is a watery troll. It's a shame Santa Monica has turned them into lizard-like creatures rather than the original fiddle-playing water spirits, but kudos on the name.

GI also states that Kratos' shield has been updated, with a Dauntless and a Stonewall shield available for tactically distinct situations. The Dauntless is used for last-second parries that increase your ability to fling adversaries and stun them. The Stonewall is the more brutish alternative; it is too hefty to parry and is better suited for blundering into battle. The more hits it takes, the closer it gets to being able to slam into the ground and bring down everyone around you.

No new weaponry have been unveiled, but the weekend's Rick and Morty commercial provided a subtle hint. In it, Rick unlocks a chest, pulls out the axe, and says, "Ah, finally, the Leviathan Axe, plus...other unannounced upgrades." Who knows if that was about these elemental assaults, or if it was a hint that the axe would be enhanced in other ways.
