SPYRA: The Water Gun with Liquid Bullets and Recharge Itself

The Spyra LX must be manually fueled and primed, yet it continues to discharge single bursts of water
A German startup unveiled an over-engineered rechargeable self-filling water pistol that blasted small bursts of water rather than extended streams in 2018, what feels like around six decades ago. The new Spyra LX performs the same thing, but instead of batteries and an electric motor, a manually driven system for refilling and pressurizing the blaster is used.
While the Spyra One brought as much innovation to the Summer classic as Lonnie Johnson's design did, there were a few drawbacks with the powered blaster that stopped it from being a popular hit. Not only did you have to remember to charge it, but the Spyra One was also renowned for leaking, frequently leaving the user as wet as the target. That issue was remedied with last year's enhanced Spyra Two, which also increased the toy's range, refill times, and battery life, but both models cost $175, which was extraordinarily pricey, especially for an adult-targeted toy.

The new Spyra LX does away with the bulky rechargeable batteries, pumps, and motors of its two predecessors in favor of a rear handle that the user continuously pulls back to fill the blaster's reservoir while also pressurizing it. Rather of requiring access to hoses and faucets, users just submerge the front of the Spyra LX into a bucket of water (or pond, lake, or pool) while pumping the handle. Pulling the trigger once full and compressed launches fast bursts of water that hold together for around 30 feet, however performance can vary based on wind and weather.

The Spyra LX's biggest feature, which appears to be available today on the company's website, is its new $89 price tag. That is still expensive for a water gun when Super Soaker continues to produce countless models for less than a third of the price of the Spyra LX, but having tried the original Spyra One a few years ago, we'll admit the unique firing mechanism makes a compelling case for splurging on one once Summer arrives.
