How to Fix Elden Ring's Auto-Save Problem, and Other Common Issues

Elden Ring is a terrific game, however issues may mar the experience
Elden Ring, one of the year's most anticipated video games, is officially available for purchase. It gained unanimous acclaim from critics and has one of the top all-time Metacritic and OpenCritic review score averages, but even those perfect scores couldn't foretell Elden Ring's launch-day performance troubles.

What exactly is Elden Ring's PS5 save data bug?

It's not a dumpster fire on day one, as some new video games may be, but there are a few issues to be aware of before traveling into the Lands Between. On PlayStation 5, for example, one specific flaw causes save data difficulties. The problem appears to be with how the game stores data—or, in this case, does not save data. It's likely that certain data won't save if players shut the Elden Ring program from the PS5 menu, turn off the console without saving, or even put the console in rest mode while in-game.

FromSoftware will presumably solve this in a future patch, but in the meanwhile, save and quit from the main menu before stopping the game or turning off your PS5.

Other Elden Ring problems that players can resolve on their own

Elden Ring will be patched by FromSoftware to address many of the major launch issues, including the graphics hitches and lag that some PC gamers are experiencing. However, by just shutting and restarting the game, users may cure a variety of minor issues, including:
  • Inputs from the controller and keyboard are not being registered.
  • NPCs behaving inappropriately or interaction cues not appearing
  • Inability to access the in-game menus
  • Load times that are abnormally long while driving at high speeds
  • Other minor graphical flaws include game items and NPCs not loading or displaying properly, as well as minor graphical glitches.
It's worth noting that if you're playing on a PC, you may need to restart Steam or reset your console in some circumstances.

Rebooting the game can also resolve intermittent network difficulties, such as the "Network status check failed" notice or inability to play online co-op, however this can also occur when the game's servers are overcrowded, in which case you may simply have to wait out the network congestion.

Aside from a few minor problems, Elden Ring lives up to the hype—assuming you enjoy FromSoftware's style of tough action RPGs. It's a shame the game's debut went more smoothly than expected, but maybe future patches will address these lingering difficulties.
