It's a long shot, but could this be how mutants appear in the MCU?
Mattel's upcoming Barbie film—yes, this is happening—is becoming more newsworthy than you might think. The announcement that Little Women's Greta Gerwig would direct the film, starring Margot Robbie, piqued people's interest. It can now add a recent Marvel hero to its ranks, in addition to the recent additions of Ryan Gosling as Ken and America Ferrera as an unknown character to the cast.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Simu Liu, who is still on a high from Shang-Chi and Kim's Convenience, is in talks to join the cast before filming begins later this year. At the moment, details about his character are being kept under wraps, as was the case with Ferrera's recent casting. It feels reasonable to assume he'll be a friend of Ken's, but which one is a guess. Aside from Ken's younger brother Tommy and the black characters Brad and Curtis, Liu could play only a few named male characters from the Barbie toy canon. He could even be portraying an original character named Shaun, for all we know. Everything is possible!
It's genuinely strange that, aside from the two top-billed leads and Gerwig directing (from a script written by her and Marriage Story's Noah Baumbach), not much is known about the Barbie film. On some level, however, that appears to be the point: Robbie herself stated last year that she hoped the inclusion of the Oscar-nominated director would turn heads and get people to see the film. And she could be right, but the Barbie movie comes at a time when it's clearer than ever how much Hollywood wants to profit from everyone's nostalgia. The marketing for this film will have to work hard to persuade people that it is worth watching despite its unusual cast and director.
Barbie is set to be released in 2023.
