90s Movies are Great, According to Movie Fans

Which year was the best in film history? The age-old argument appears to have been resolved, with the solution being: 1995

According to moviegoers, 1995 was the best year for movies

BingoSites conducted research comparing the most highly rated movie releases from 1920 and 2022 and discovered that 1995 was responsible for the most number of films in the publicly-ranked IMDb's Top 250 movies of all time.

There are eight films from 1995 on that list: Seven, The Usual Suspects, Toy Story, Braveheart, Heat, Casino, Before Sunrise, and the French drama La Haine.

Other excellent 1995 films that did not make the Top 250 include the year's top film, Die Hard With a Vengeance, Trainspotting, Apollo 13, GoldenEye, Pocahontas, Get Shorty, Bad Boys, Leaving Las Vegas, and Jumanji.

Braveheart, directed by Mel Gibson, won Best Picture and Best Director at the Oscars, and Babe and Sense and Sensibility were both nominated for Golden Globes that year.

However, IMDb ratings are not an exact science. Films from 1994 (including the current number one The Shawshank Redemption) had a higher average rating of 8.7 in the Top 250, as do films from 1999, although the results will undoubtedly cause some controversy among cineastes.

According to the research, the second-best year was 1957, with seven movies in the Top 250: 12 Angry Men, Paths of Glory, Witness for the Prosecution, The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, The Bridge on the River Kwai, and Nights of Cabiria.

According to IMDb users, the third greatest year was 2019, with seven films — but a somewhat lower average rating — including Parasite, Joker, Avengers: Endgame, 1917, Klaus, Le Mans '66, and Miracle in Cell No.7.

"1995 was a great year for movies and it looks to be the go-to year for superbly written crime thrillers - with five of the eight top titles falling into this category," said a BingoSites representative.

"These games have clearly lasted the test of time, with viewers continuing to appreciate them despite the availability of new releases 27 years later.

"While the mid-1990s came out on top, the fact that 1957 came in second demonstrates that people still have a deep love for previous legendary pieces of film."
