Costumes should not be too gory or Scary so as not to scare our younger students
A school district in New York state announced on Thursday that children will not be allowed to dress up as characters from the Netflix hit "Squid Game" for Halloween, citing concerns that the costumes glorify violence.
Hundreds of cash-strapped people are pitted against each other in traditional children's games in this dystopian South Korean thriller. The winner can earn millions of dollars, but losers are killed.
Marbles, tug of war, and red light, green light are some of the games available.
The Fayetteville-Manlius school district, located about 250 miles (400 kilometers) north of New York City, sent a letter to parents informing them that costumes from the show, such as masks, green tracksuits, and pink jumpsuits, would not be permitted at its six schools.
"Our principals wanted to make sure our families are aware that any student wearing a Halloween costume from this show to school would be inappropriate because of the potential violent messages associated with the costume," district superintendent Craig Tice said in an emailed statement to AFP.
"Costumes should not be too gory or scary so as not to scare our younger students," he said, quoting school guidelines.
Some students had been "mimicking" games from the series, according to Tice. Three elementary schools for children aged 5 to 10 are managed by the district.
In the four weeks following its release in mid-September, "Squid Game" became Netflix's most popular show ever, with 142 million households watching it.
Squid Game-themed products were on their way to retail outlets, the streaming platform told investors earlier this month.
Parents in England were warned earlier this month that their children were reenacting games from the series, which is intended for mature audiences, according to reports.
