THE PHILIPPINES — MANILA, Philippines — Converge ICT Solutions Inc., a broadband company, expects to finish its ₱6B domestic submarine cable project this weekend, connecting the country's major island groups to the country's national fiber backbone.

The company said in a statement that the 1,800-kilometer subsea cable will make its "final landing" on Sunday, October 31 in Coron, Palawan.

The subsea cables that connect to the company's domestic backbone were designed for network redundancy, ensuring service availability even in the event of fiber cuts, according to the company.

"By 'closing' the loops on our primary and secondary routes, we've achieved a high level of resiliency in the network, more than just interconnection of the major islands," Uy said.

Converge interconnected Visayas and Mindanao in Phase 1 of its domestic subsea backbone rollout, which will start in Bogo, Cebu, and Cagayan De Oro.

Phase 2 involved connecting to the Visayas via Roxas City, Capiz in Panay Island, and Mindanao via Buenavista, Agusan del Norte, completing the network's loops.

Twenty cable landing stations across the country backed the initiative.

Converge uses 48-fiber core optical cables with 400G and 800G technology, effectively increasing the network's capacity to transmit large amounts of data over long distances.

"All of these network design and technology features simply mean that your connection on our network is more stable, resilient, and less prone to failure or outages – regardless of where you are in the country," said Converge COO Jesus Romero.

Converge said it is ready to connect more unserved and underserved areas in the country now that the domestic fiber backbone has gone live, putting it on track to meet its target of covering 55 percent of Philippine households by 2025.

The company's fiber backbone had already reached over 80,500 kilometers as of July 2021, and fiber-to-home port deployment had reached a new high of 565,848 new ports in the second quarter alone.
