Things that Student Drivers should know after getting a License, and before Driving Alone

It's nice and advisable if there is a Professional Driver that will guide you and act as your Instructor, every time you drive on the road with other vehicles, but when you got your License, the learning shouldn't stop.
Correct way to position Side Mirrors
STUDENT DRIVER TIP #1
Positioning your side mirrors this way can help you:
- prevent side-swiping other vehicles, posts, gutters, or other objects especially when you are making a turn. (Example is the gallon of water on the side)
-makes reversing incredibly easier.
Avoid "Hanging" at all cost
STUDENT DRIVER TIP #2
As much as you can, try to avoid "Hanging" at steep ramps (found in the malls) especially for Manual Transmission cars. Or if you're using an old car.
This might put pressure in your engine and get it to turn off, putting the cars behind you in danger.
Try to avoid this at all times, unless you have perfected your "hanging" skills.
Watch out for charging motorcycle drivers on your side. Always glance at your side mirror FIRST before making a turn. Motorcycle riders tend to do this especially when it's traffic.

Respect road lanes at all times, especially when making a U-turn on highways (e.g. EDSA, Quezon Ave.) All modern vehicles are capable of making steep turns, don't be lazy on steering your wheel. Vehicles on highways are fast, violating this important driving principle might put you and your loved-ones in danger.

Beware of "U-Turning" Public Utility Vehicle [PUV]. Jeepney drivers tend to do this not because they're douchebags, but because their vehicles are long and aren't capable of "fully" turning the wheel. The only way they can successfully do a "U-Turn" is thru the 2nd lane. So you have to watch out especially when you are on the left-most lane.

The proper and SAFE way, is to slowly move ONE lane at a time. Be sure to use your turning signal to let other drivers know your intentions. Use your side-mirrors to check for clearance before moving in. If you missed a street you want to go into, take the next U-turn slot and try again. Don't force yourself into it. Don't take risky chances. Life is fragile.

Be cautious of the car beside you, especially when you are with an SUV, a Van, a Truck, or other bulky vehicles. Due to its size, you wouldn't be able to see what's on the other side of the road WHEN both of you are traveling at the same speed, and you happen to be behind them. As soon as they (Car beside you) slow down, slow down as well, follow their speed, see what's infront of them, and stop if you needed to. Most of the time, it's a jay-walker, or a U-Turning vehicle.

Beware of the little "Blind Spot" infront of your vehicle. This kind of accident WORKS when both parties are moving at the same speed towards each other. Motorcycles and crossing Pedestrians FIT on that small spot, You wouldn't be able to see them. So when crossing a street, secure that blind spot by moving your head a little bit to the side.

When traffic is slow and you're at the back of a large vehicle (truck/bus), most of the time you will not see the stop light. So don't be surprised when you find yourself getting a ticket for beating the red light. What you must do is to maintain distance when approaching an intersection and see to it that you can actually make it before crossing. Failing to do this could ALSO lead to accident if the intersecting lane that you're blocking is not congested and cars are at a speed.

The REAL definition of "Professional" Diving is NOT about how FAST you can drive. But it's about how skilled you are at preventing accidents and keeping your passengers SAFE.
