Productivity and the Future of Work From Home Setup

Work From Home

The future of work isn't about where you work. It's about choice!

Just five years ago, something wild happened: pretty much everyone went home. Not for vacation, just... home. Billions of us in almost 70 countries were told to stay put. It was the biggest work experiment ever, and nobody signed up for it! But guess what? The world kept spinning, and here's the craziest part: productivity didn't drop. It actually shot up!
Before all this, if you had an office job, you were in the office. Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 (or often way more!), that's where you spent most of your time. Think about it: thousands of days, meals, and countless hours just getting there and back. You probably saw your coworkers more than your own family! And that was just... normal. Until it totally wasn't.

By mid-2020, almost 40% of Aussies were working from home, a huge jump from just 8% before. City centers turned into ghost towns! But hey, that missing commute? It meant more time for morning walks, pancakes with the kids, or just an extra hour of sleep. Those quick chats by the water cooler became Slack messages. And all that "wasted" office time? Suddenly, it was golden! You could sneak in some housework before the weekend even started. Best of all, working from home meant many of us could really focus, with fewer distractions. Suddenly, work and life felt a bit more balanced, right?

Of course, some big-shot CEOs were worried, saying remote work was a productivity killer and everyone needed to get back to the office. But a report from the Australian Government Productivity Commission, looking at productivity from late 2013 to mid-2024, tells a different story. They broke the pandemic era into three interesting phases:

When the pandemic hit, a lot of places, especially lower-productivity spots like shops and touristy stuff, just closed. So, what was left were mostly high-productivity jobs. It looked like productivity jumped, but really, it was just because the less productive stuff wasn't being counted. Tricky, huh?

This is the cool part! As things reopened and working from home became normal, productivity didn't fall. It climbed! Fewer commutes, quieter spaces, and more flexibility meant a lot of us knowledge workers were just getting more done. This was when remote work really showed its stuff.

This is where companies started saying, "Okay, everyone back to the office!" And guess what? Productivity fell off a cliff! It went right back down to pre-pandemic levels. This graph really tells a story, and it happened all over the world!

So, what's the big lesson here? Working from home, whether all the time or just part-time, didn't hurt productivity. In fact, when we were all remote, it soared! While it's complicated, one thing's super clear: going back to the old ways hasn't made us more productive. Often, it's done the opposite!

Yeah, there's still a bit of a tug-of-war. Some bosses want butts in seats, and some workers love their freedom. So, what's happening is a compromise: hybrid work. A few days in the office, a few days wherever you get your best work done. This isn't just a trend; it's a huge shift in how we think about work and how it fits into our lives. Because this was never just about laptops and Zoom calls. It's about having time, having control, and being trusted. The pandemic didn't destroy the office. It just showed us something important: we weren't as tied to it as we thought. And now that we've seen a different way, a way that works, there's no going back. The future of work isn't about where you work. It's about choice!
